Computer addiction in adolescents

What is computer addiction?
Psychologists often make such a diagnosis as computer addiction in teenagers, which can be compared to drug addiction.
What are the main signs of this disease?
loss of interest in other activities;
maximum amount of time spent on the computer;
a sharp deterioration in mood, up to the appearance of aggression, when trying to distract the child from the computer;
abandoning all activities and communication in real life in favor of virtual
A little about games from a young author, Elizabeth (13 years old)
I think almost every family at least once raised the question of the amount of time spent on the phone or computer.
This is a rather unpleasant phenomenon, so I want to eliminate it. But to do this, you need to understand the reasons.

How can I tell if there is a problem?
the child spends any free time in electronic devices, does not agree to break away from the monitor, even for the sake of what he used to do with pleasure;
hides the phone or turns away from the computer at the sight of adults;
when the ban is constantly begging for a long time does not want to stop playing even for their own good, coming up with various reasons.
What should I do?
Like any addiction, computer addiction develops in teenagers at different rates. The sooner parents notice how the child’s behavior changes, the easier it is to deal with the problem. In adolescence, only one in five patients breaks up with computer addiction. This low result is due to the fact that the disease usually occurs on the basis of provoking prerequisites.
What are the main reasons?
The reasons for computer addiction may be different. For example, ordinary boredom, interest and curiosity, the influence of others. The same interest is aroused by advertising and the desire to explore an unfamiliar virtual world. Often it is enough to install only one game, and the entire electronic device becomes stuffed with different games.

Having a computer, phone, and tablet does not necessarily lead to computer addiction in a teenager. Today’s children spend a lot of time sitting on their phones, but most of them do not lose interest in the real world.
The vulnerable audience is teenagers who:
they do not fit into the social environment, do not have friends, and are considered losers among their peers;
deprived of the attention of parents engaged in work, other children,
spend all their free time at the monitor or with the phone in their hands;
they have an excess of free time, which they have nothing to do, they do not attend classes and do not spend much time studying.
Additionally affect the personal characteristics of the child – self-doubt, inability to communicate, a tendency to monotonous pastime, gambling, the presence of complexes and fears.

Computer addiction in adolescents can take various forms.
Computer games

Most often and most quickly there is an addiction to computer games in teenagers. This is due to the fact that children from an early age prefer to spend time in the game, and the Internet provides great opportunities for this.
Taking into account their interests, teenagers are offered various options from the simplest types of” Ramblers”,” shooters “and” races ” to complex strategies. Realistic images allow you to fully immerse yourself in the world of computer games.
The most famous and popular types of computer games are of interest to children all over the world. On the one hand, using computer toys, children learn to think, plan, develop reaction speed and attention.
On the other hand, great harm is caused by stories in which computer games promote violence, the power of the strong over the weak. Such games provoke aggression, reject social norms and prohibitions.

Most modern parents who have children in their Teens at one time went through a period of fascination with various computer games and their experience is aware of the danger of gaming addiction in a teenager.

Opinion of a young author, Elizabeth (13 years old)
The same games are different. Sometimes useful, like electronic chess, and sometimes not quite, and even sometimes harmful, like the favorite shooting games of teenagers. Their classification will help you understand their usefulness. My vision goes from less useful to more useful:
Ekshen. This is a fairly popular type, usually called shooting games. Develops only one thing-reaction.
Role. The point is that the player becomes a certain character, and must behave the same way. Develops imagination and empathy.
Simulators. Here events are copied or simply given the opportunity to take the place of someone else, to do something that in real life is difficult or impossible to do. They develop imagination, empathy, and are not highly addictive.
Venturesome. Here, you need a reaction and the ability to quickly analyze the situation. For example, racing or card games.
Quests. They are very similar to logical ones in that you need to draw conclusions and analyze, but the difference is that in quests, the player as it were becomes a character, and lives his life. They develop imagination, analytical skills, mindfulness, and empathy.
Logical. Slowness and thoughtfulness are important here. Usually they are puzzles or tasks for ingenuity and logic. They develop analytical skills, logic, attentiveness, and expand their horizons.
Strategies. Perhaps the most useful of all types, since playing them, the child must analyze the situation, be able to think tactically, have a developed logic and think one step ahead.
All of the above is quite positive. However, the main problem is that usually teenagers do not observe the measure of playing, and instead of taking breaks or establishing a clear regime, children play on and on, unable to tear themselves away from such an interesting activity.

Social network

In addition to games, social networks, which are conceived as a means of communication between people with common interests, pose a great danger. Often this happens, but it also happens when a teenager just hangs in them, not getting information, just out of habit or laziness. Children from 9-10 years old, teenagers and people of all ages spend a lot of time looking at the screens of computers or phones.
In fact, most of the communication in social networks is a lazy and meaningless pastime. It discourages thinking, concentration, and simply steals time. If you go to any of the social networks for a minute, you can spend hours there without getting any useful information.

It is worth paying attention to how teenagers are constantly opening various pages of their friends during homework and see how much time they are wasting.

First of all, this computer addiction affects girls who have a lot of free time. Compared to boys, girls suffer more from a lack of communication and try to solve it through virtual contacts in social networks.

What are the main dangers and consequences?
Many parents do not see any harm in computer addiction compared to alcohol or drug addiction. But addiction to computer entertainment, also, carries a danger to both the psychological and physical health of the child. Physically, an unlimited amount of time spent at the monitor leads to diseases of the spine, joints, deterioration of vision, obesity, or, conversely, a sharp weight loss. Teenagers physically lag behind their peers.

Psychologically, teenagers completely lose touch with the world around them. They stop communicating with relatives and peers, or communicate only on topics related to their virtual Hobbies.

Teenagers who are subject to gambling addiction are aggressive. For them, the authority of their parents ceases to exist, they become unmanageable. Since games often require money, they spend pocket money on them. Someone from the teen audience gets paid to participate in games. Other players who suffer from computer addiction ask their parents for money, and more often steal it or take it from other children.

When trying to remove dependent children from the computer, their behavior can be compared to drug withdrawal. They make scandals, tantrums, throw fists, run away from home.

Computer dependency.
It is easier to prevent any of the addictions than to treat them later. If you already notice the first signs of the disease, you must immediately take action. Treatment of computer addiction differs in that it will not be possible to completely eliminate the computer and the Internet from the life of a teenager. In mild forms of the problem, the work of a psychologist will help perfectly, but when everything is seriously started, medication may be required. Therefore, do not postpone a visit to a specialist, any problem is easier to solve when it first appeared.
How should parents behave with dependent children?
What should I do and what shouldn’t I do?

Must not:

completely deprive all gadgets, including a phone, tablet, and so on, as this will make a teenager an outcast among peers;
yelling at a teenager and making scandals, so as not to divide the family into two warring camps;
to say that the child is not all right with his head and threaten a teenager with a visit to a psychologist, as this only increases his self-confidence, causes depression.
